PD2600 is a fan-made Atari 2600 emulator for Playdate.

The project started from a simple idea:

"So many Atari 2600 games use bi-directional movement... what if they could be mapped to the Playdate's crank?"

The emulator is still under active development, and many bugs are still being discovered.

Emulating the Atari 2600 was both challenging and fascinating. With no frame buffer, the CPU must synchronize with the TIA cycle by cycle (the so known "racing the beam!"), using registers such as WSYNC, NUSIZ, GRP0/GRP1, and RESP0/RESP1 to build each scanline. The Playdate's 1-bit LCD introduces additional challenges: there is no NTSC color, grayscale, or CRT persistence, so some games require OR-merging consecutive frames to reduce flicker. Audio is also translated from the TIA's two-channel, LFSR-based sound generator, upsampled and filtered to preserve "some" of its distinctive Atari character.

PD2600 does not try to replicate the original Atari 2600 experience: nothing replaces the real hardware. Instead, it adapts these games to the Playdate's 400ร—240 1-bit display, applying per-ROM adjustments such as display geometry, scanline windowing, sprite blank zones, and input routing. Note, even some bullets/balls are larger in some games to be properly read on Playdate (Atlantis, Venture...). These tweaks are identified by CRC32, ensuring each game can be individually tuned without affecting the others.

Current differences include:

  • Graphics: Colors are converted to black and white using brightness thresholds. A generic mapping is used by default, although some games (such as Breakout) use custom tone mappings. These can be adjusted in the contrast game settings.
  • Speed: The emulator currently runs slower than original hardware, which can make some games more challenging.
  • Sound: Don't expect fidelity! Audio differs from the originals, sometimes in surprisingly funny ways. Future versions may include game-specific sound mappings to better match the original games.
  • Sprite blending: Blending is disabled by default. Some games, such as Beany Bopper, Missile Command, or Pac-Man, benefit from blending two or even three frames together. This can be configured in the game settings.

How to upload Roms

Inside pd2600.pdx, you'll find a folder named roms. Simply copy your ROMs into this folder, making sure they are in .bin format (not .a26).

Most of the ROMs I've tested are NTSC versions, although I suspect Phantom Panzer and Cross Force may be PAL. In the future I may study PAL versions of other games too: Since the emulator runs at 60fps (NTSC timing), PAL ROMs designed for 50fps will run about 20% faster than originally intended, so the experience (I guess) may be smoother.

For now, I recommend using the NTSC versions. If your ROMs are in .a26 format, you can usually just rename the extension to .bin without any issues.

Game Settings

PD2600 is designed to let players customize the experience and compensate for the unique characteristics of the emulator. These Game Settings will be automatically saved in data/com.aburg.pd2600.

Crank Mode

The crank can be configured as:

  • Native paddle (ideal for games designed around rotary controllers)
  • Left/Right movement
  • Up/Down movement
  • Fire, fire, fire! (Use it as a gatling gun, it's perfect for certain maze games!)

See the Recommended Games matrix above to find the recommended crank mode for each game.

Blending

Blending combines multiple frames into one to reduce the flickering effect caused by rapidly multiplexed sprites.

In most cases, a value of 2 provides the best compromise. A value of 3 can reduce flickering further but may leave visible trails.

Contrast

Adjust the brightness threshold used for black-and-white conversion. Three preset levels are available.

Control Mapping

Every game allows custom mapping of:

  • Fire
  • Reset
  • Joystick directions

When using the crank for movement, mapping Fire to one of the D-pad buttons often results in a more comfortable control scheme.

For example, in Asteroids, if the crank controls left/right rotation, you may prefer to map the following to better hold the Playdate:

  • Fire โ†’ Left
  • Thrust โ†’ Up

NOTE: Unfortunately, the current version does not support the Atari 2600 difficulty switches (A/B) yet.

Score Notes

The Atari 2600 is all about arcade-style high scores.

To preserve that spirit, each game includes a Score Notes field where you can record your personal bests, challenges, or goals; saving you from keeping score on a separate piece of paper. Just check out the Score Notes at Game Settings view.
